Memorial Day Front Door Star

Memorial Day Front Door Star

Forget a traditional wreath this holiday weekend and show off your pride with this faux quilted star made with Mod Podge and fabric. This is a great way to use up little scraps of fabric and ribbons.

Materials:
Metal or papier-mâché star
FolkArt Acrylic Paint - Azure Blue
FolkArt Extreme Glitter - Turquoise
Foam Paintbrush
Scrap paper & pencil
Red, white and blue printed fabric – 2 prints
Scissors
Mod Podge - Matte
Wood star shape
FolkArt Extreme Glitter - Red
FolkArt Acrylic Paint- Engine Red
Tulle
Hot glue gun
Scrap ribbons

Steps:
1. Paint the star with a coat of Folkart azure blue paint. Allow to dry. Paint 3 layers of turquoise Extreme Glitter over the blue paint. Allow to dry in between coats.

2. Make a template of the sides or points of the star shape with a piece of scrap paper. Use the template as a guide for cutting out pieces of the red, white and blue printed fabrics. For this design I used two different prints.

3. Apply Mod Podge to the star and place the cut pieces of fabric into the Mod Podge, add a coat of Mod Podge over the fabric. Smooth with your fingers and reposition if the fabric slips.

4. Paint the small wood star red and topcoat with 2 layers of Extreme Glitter in red. Hot glue a poof of tulle behind the star. Hot glue the tulled star to the center of the star. Tie decorative ribbons to the top of the star. Pin It

My Dove Beauty Campaign

My Dove Beauty video for Oprah is live! You can check it out here! I had a blast working with them! It was such an honor to be included in the series with so many awesome women.

The video went live yesterday and when I woke up this morning my email was flooded with questions. I thought I would address some of them here.

The most asked questions and comments were......

Did you really cry when you found jeans that fit?

Yes - I was in an Abercrombie & Fitch and finally found a pair that fit after going to every shop in the mall. They were my last hope and they had this awesome pair with pink pipped pockets. I was so happy that I got tears....so silly.

I did not know you were a Costume Designer! How did you get into costume design?

Yep! I did costumes for 10 years. I worked in the costume department on 24 films and TV shows before becoming a producer/writer/host. I was also a personal dresser for Jennifer Love Hewitt. I got to dress some of Hollywood's leading ladies and gents. That means, I got to see most of them naked or in their undies. I have lots of stories, but a good costumer never tells.....

I got into costumes while living in Texas. My first film was with Dwight Yoakam (he played a rodeo clown) - it was really low budget and wacky. I got the job after researching with the Film and Television Commission of Texas. I called, applied and within 3 days was officially working on my first film. My next film was Bottle Rocket with Wes Anderson. He was a delight and I was lucky enough to continue to work with him in the future.

You can learn more about my film credits at my IMDB page!

How do you hem pants?

I have several techniques for hemming! I am thinking that a full blog post on hemming is in order! Check back soon.

I had no idea you were so short! You don't look short on TV.

5' 2" to be precise. I wear big wedgie shoes behind the craft table when we film. Steve is over 6 feet tall so we have to balance each other out. He wears socks and I were huge high heels. Pin It

Garden Pretties

Pin It Seed Packets are the inspiration for this garden party! Whip up some garden pretties with a little paint, mod podge and seed packets. All of the bases for the projects were purchased at the thrift shop or dollar store. The seed packets were 10 for $1.00 from my local dollar store. All the projects were designed for Plaid. Click the links for complete instructions and materials lists.

Show off some fresh cut flowers or some silks in this French inspired flower bucket. The soft pink look was achieved by using glaze, cream paint and a cotton rag.

Add a little romantic light to your garden with this simple tea light holder. I picked up this glass container at the thrift shop for .50 cents and with in 3 minutes it was transformed into this cutie.

Party Tray...Oh, I can see a cold pitcher of lavender lemonade being served or perhaps a pitcher of sangria. This was re-crafted from a dark wood heavily scratched tray that was $3.00 at my local thrift shop.

This little peg hook is perfect for hanging all your garden tools. This began as a holiday themed jacket rack from the thrift store.

Cute garden markers are a cinch to make! By adding a coat of clear outdoor sealer they will last in the rain or shine.

Jazz up boring clay pots with a little paint and a velvet ribbon. Who says you can't have a little velvet in the garden. Pin It

Tutorial: Fabric Printing with Dishwasher Gel

Fabric Printing with Dishwasher Gel

Did you know that with a few supplies from your kitchen you can create your own printed fabric? All you will need is some cookies cutters and bleach based dish-washing gel. This technique produces a soft vintage look. The process is fast so keep and eye on your bleaching. For large pieces of fabric, you might need to work in stages.

Supplies:
Bleach-based automatic dishwasher gel
Medium hued t-shirt (pre-washed) or fabric
Piece of cardboard or an old magazine
Small dish
Rubber Gloves

Steps:

1.Place the cardboard inside a t-shirt or under the fabric to prevent the dye from penetrating to the other side.

2. Squirt some of the bleach dishwashing gel into the dish.

3. Dip the cookie cutter into the gel and press onto the t-shirt.

4. The bleach will bleed into the fibers as it sets. Allow it to set for 30 minutes, then wash immediately to deactivate the bleach. Pin It

Bake it: Easy Roasted Garlic

Roasted garlic is one of our favorite treats. We spread it on small hard breads and crackers, use it in salad dressings and marinades, we even add it to omelets.

I have been making roasted garlic using a whole head of garlic for years but only recently started experimenting with the pre-peeled garlic. Pre-peeled garlic is usually sold in the refrigerated section of the produce section at any grocery store.

I used the Trader Joe's brand for this recipe. I have used the jumbo tub from Costco for larger amounts and parties. Sometimes it comes in a jar or tub and other times it is in shrink packaging. Just look around your shop or ask the produce person.

At first, I was a little unsure of the "pop of flavor" or "mellow bite" the pre-peeled would have. I was pleasantly surprised at the delicious flavor, smooth texture and ease of working with pre-peeled garlic.

What You Will Need:
1 package of pre-peeled garlic
kosher salt
pepper
olive oil
ramekin
tin foil
cookie sheet

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees f.

2. Fill a oven proof ramekin 3/4 full with garlic, sprinkle with kosher salt and pepper and generously drizzle with olive oil.

3. Cover with foil and place on a jelly roll cookie sheet (one with a lip around the edge).

4. Bake for 40 -50 minutes. Carefully remove from oven. Garlic should be soft on the inside and slightly firm on the outside.

5. Use a fork or tongs to remove the garlic from the oil. Ready to serve warm or room temperature. The remaining olive oil can be cooled and used for salad dressing. Pin It
