New House: Raised Vegatbale Garden

all ready for planting

Sometimes, Eddie and I get joint gifts for our birthday because we only have a few weeks between the dates. (I am August 22 and he is September 9th) One year we got tickets to see Sting and Annie Lennox at the Hollywood Bowl. That was when we lived in an apartment in Hollywood and we just walked over to the Bowl.

This year, now that we bought our house and are in full "fix-up" mode, we find ourselves wanting (or needing) things like a new raised bed garden planter. I was so delighted when the 7 foot box arrived and even more delighted when Eddie began to put it together.

We are planning on using the principles of square foot gardening for this bed. We are going to start with lettuce and anything we can plant in fall for our zone. Next spring, we will begin with a summer veggie garden. We are also planning a whiskey barrel of tomatoes or perhaps a hanging tomato garden.

The planter box was not as easy as it looks to put together....although with the addition of a few decorative wood peices from the depot, she should spiffy right up.

The open bottom will have a layer of fiber (almost like felt) and sturdy mesh that holds the dirt in. This allows for the water to drain and keeps the soil very loose and light. Creating crops that harvest twice as much in a smaller space.

I am working on a flagstone walkway (landing pad) just at the base of the garden bed. I am thinking of trying ground-cover between the stones....or perhaps small pebbles. Pin It

I Love crafting! How can I do it for less?

I Love crafting! How can I do it for less?
(picture is a scan of fabric from my stash bin)

#1. Rethink what you have. Approach with the glass is half full attitude.

#2. Swap supplies with friends. Beg, borrow and steal - ok don't steal. Chances are your friends have a tool you need to use and vice a versa. Are you overloaded on pink ribbon and you really need chipbaord letters? Ask around on craft or art forums, message boards, twitter, facebook or myspace for anyone who might be interested in a swap. If you live near crafty friends host a swap party where everyone can bring items they want to swap.

#3. Co-op purchase large or expensive tools with a creative friend.

#4. Use coupons! Use the coupons from craft stores that are found in the newspaper. If you don't get the paper, ask a neighbor to save them for you. Sign up for a sale flyer via email. The stores will email you when they have a coupon and you print at home. Jo-Ann Fabrics does this.

#5 Learn new stitches. If your yarn stash is low and your budget lower, work on learning new stitches.

#6. Break it and remake it. Reconstruct old or outdated jewelry into new pieces by breaking them apart and restringing.

#7. Use textile medium to create your won fabric paints. You can turn an entire rack of acrylic paint or 1/2 a bottle of acrylic paint into fabric paint by just adding a little textile medium to the mix.

#8. Re-cycle, re-purpose.....re-create. Remake something around your house or closet. A fresh coat of paint, a little Mod Podge or the addition a ribbon trim are quick and easy ways to creatively update items you already have.

#9. Finish a project that you have started. Before you begin something new...finish what you started.

#10. Make it small, work on smaller projects. Yes, it can be as easy as that...use scraps of fabric to create smaller sewing projects, make flowers and trims with scrap yarn, work on earrings and pendants instead of that necklace that requires 17 large beads. Pin It

Big rain storm in St.Petes!

Julie & Julia based on the Julie Powell book

Carol and I stopped by Michaels to pick up a few supplies for our HSN prep and then we headed back to the hotel to do a little crafting. We got a few coats of texture paint on some kraft paper pumpkins and then we popped off to see Julia and Julia. Carol and I were a little blown away by the movie. We both felt like we were being channeled.

Make it: Kids Painted Shower Curtain

Store-bought fabric shower curtain
Iron
Small foam stamps
Craft foam
Transfer paper
Pencil
Craft knife
Self-healing mat
Scissors
Hole punch
Re-positionable stencil adhesive
Corrugated paper, heavy cardstock, or cardboard
Large plastic drop cloth
Craft paints
Textile medium
Foam brushes
Cotton swabs
Ruler
Chalk
Pressing cloth

Pre-wash and dry your shower curtain to remove sizing. Iron the curtain to remove wrinkles, if necessary.

Make your own large foam stamps using the images on smaller foam stamps (or use images found elsewhere, or draw your own pictures). Copy each of your foam stamps on a copy machine or scanner, enlarging each one to the size of your choosing. We enlarged our images so that the largest dimension on each one was 8”. Using a pencil and transfer paper, transfer the image onto craft foam.

Your transfer lines may be faint -- using light colored transfer paper on black craft foam works best.

Cut your design out of the craft foam. Scissors cut through the foam very easily, but you may need a craft knife to cut out smaller details in the design. Use a hole punch for small circular details like eyes.

Spray one side of the foam cutout with a light coating of re-positionable stencil adhesive. Press the foam cutout onto a piece of 8 ½” x 11” corrugated paper (you can also use heavy cardstock or cardboard), making sure the cutout is centered. If using corrugated paper, stick the cutout to the smooth side. Fold two sides of the corrugated paper up to create handles. The re-positionable stencil adhesive will allow you to remove the foam cutouts from the corrugated paper so you can wash the cutouts and reuse the corrugated paper.

Lay the shower curtain out over a large plastic drop cloth to protect your work surface. Mix craft paint with textile medium (your container of textile medium will tell you what ratios to use). Use a foam brush to cover the foam cutout with paint. You want a moderate amount of paint on the stamp, but be careful not to get too much paint on the backing. A cotton swab is a good tool to use to clean excess paint off of the stamp, if necessary.

Place the stamp down on the fabric shower curtain and apply medium pressure. Rub the back of the stamp a few times and carefully lift the stamp off of the fabric. Apply more paint to the stamp and repeat. Use the grommets at the top of the shower curtain to help evenly space the stamps and use a 12” ruler and chalk to help space the rows evenly apart. Keep stamping until you are happy with your design.

Allow the paint to completely dry overnight. Heat set the paint by ironing over each image with a hot, dry iron for 10 to 20 seconds, using a pressing cloth in between the iron and the shower curtain. Pin It

Before: Ikea Mirror
After: Ikea Mirror Hack

Materials:

Gallery Glass

Gallery Glass Colors:
16008 - Gallery Glass ® Window Color™ - Kelly Green, 2 oz.
16012 - Gallery Glass ® Window Color™ - Royal Blue, 2 oz.
16014 - Gallery Glass ® Window Color™ - Amethyst, 2 oz.
16035 - Gallery Glass ® Window Color™ - Lime Green, 2 oz.
16425 - Gallery Glass ® Window Color™ - Citrus Yellow, 2 oz.
16455 - Gallery Glass ® Window Color™ - Sunflower, 2 oz.
16457 - Gallery Glass ® Window Color™ - Plum, 2 oz.
17053 - Gallery Glass ® Window Color™ - Jadeite Green, 2 oz.

Instructions:

1. Begin by prepping your surface by cleaning the mirror. The mirror that I used in this project has small mirrors around the rim. If your mirror is flat, don’t worry it, you can use the same technique.

2. Working in a random pattern, paint each of the mirror tiles with a different color of gallery glass. If you don’t have mirror tiles, just paint small squares around the rim. You will want to paint the squares for at least 3 or 4 rows around the rim. Allow the paint to dry for 36 hours.

Tips: Never shake Gallery Glass! If you do you might get an air bubble. If you get an air bubble, just pop it with the end of a sewing pin. If you make a mistake, wait for it to dry and just peel the mistake away. Pin It
